Twitter Tips For Business - 2. Tweet Nicely

If you are planning to use Twitter to promote your business - and attract new customers - try to post tweets that will be of interest to your target audience - whoever they are.

My target - generally - is local small businesses - particularly in Cornwall. Also visitors to and people living in and around St Ives. My business is developing websites, helping with online marketing and promoting the local area.

While an occasional bit of relevant humour doesn't go amiss (I'm a particular fan of News Biscuit) - I recognise - unlike some business Tweeters - that most of my audience are probably not interested in any of the following:

  • A photo of what I'm having for lunch.
  • The fact that I'm just heading out for a nice walk.
  • My successful installation of Linux V23.4.6.7.
  • Updates on my current health and medical conditions.
  • The latest activities and antics of my pet tortoise.

What I hope they are interested in is relevant news about what's going on in St Ives and West Cornwall, nice photos of the area, useful links and occasionally (maybe I flatter myself) my latest web design and development projects.

Example:

Some of the more geeky web developers out there like to trumpet on Twitter things like:
'New Joomla V29.3.4 release provides full support for Polymorphism and Orthogonal Relationships ... (link)'.

If your target is small businesses they are more likely to be interested in something like:
'Here are five simple ideas to improve your Facebook and Twitter pages ... (link)'

I'm a qualified (British Computer Society) IT professional - but I'm no geek. As well as online marketng I specialise in Business Analysis and Project Management. I can help you to clarify your requirements using a number of techniques - including Business Modelling, Mind Mapping, Stakeholder Analysis, Creative Brainstorming and more.

Or - simply by talking to you about your business and your aims !
